You can use the bones from a previously cooked meal, raw ones, keep the skin on or off, bones browned for added flavor or unbrowned, parts of the carcass, such as feet, necks, ribs, and knuckles or the whole thing
- Water 8 cups
- Apple Cider Vinegar 2-4 tbsp
- Onion, 2 medium. Peel them and cut into quarters
- Peeled and sliced garlic, 4-6 cloves
- Shitake mushrooms, ½ cup
- Turmeric powder 2 tsp
- Peeled ginger root, 4-6 slices
- Dried oregano 2 tsp
- In a big pot, gather the bones, water, and vinegar.
- Put the pot on heat until the water boils, so you can remove the scum that rises to the top.
- Now let the stew simmer on low heat for 8-12 hours (slow cooker ideal), if you are using fish or shellfish bones, double that for poultry, and even longer for beef or lamb.
- Tip in the rest of the ingredients as the broth in the last hour.
- Once the broth has cooked, strain it, and remove the bones and veggies.
- If you want to remove the fat from it, keep the broth in the fridge until a white layer forms at the surface. Remove it with a spoon. The broth will still gel up in the fridge but it won’t have excess fat in it.
- You can store the broth in the freezer for several months. It will stay good in the fridge for 4-5 days.
- Use spoonfuls of it and add it to different dishes, such as gravies, soups, sauces, stews, and braised dishes.
Should I Use Bone Broth?
If it’s easy for you to shop for bones and cook them, then yes!
Bone broth can be a good source for different kinds of nutrients. And the best part is that they will come in one neat package!
