Thanks to Netflix, a whole new generation is enjoying the 1990’s Exercises-That-Burn-More-Fat-Than-Runningclassic sit-com Friends.

In “The One Where Phoebe Runs” Rachel and Phoebe go running in Central Park in New York City. Rachael runs along, legs pumping a regular cadence, arms churning, methodically breathing.

Phoebe, on the other hand, runs like a small child just learning how to walk, arms flailing, legs moving at odd angles, gleefully proclaiming, “That’s not running!”

Try as we might, some of us are just Phoebes when it comes to running!

No matter how hard we try, our bodies will simply not move the way they should, and we are left sore, frustrated, punished and feeling foolish.

While running burns roughly 9 calories a minute, which is the equivalent of 1 gram of fat, it is not the most efficient way to burn fat.

These 13 exercises burn up to more than double the calories of running!

1. Trampolining

After removing the bedroom from the equation, burning calories and having fun rarely go hand-in-hand.

Until now.

Throw in the extra calories you burn from the shrieking, laughing and whooping and 10 minutes of air-time sees you burn as much as 30 minutes of jogging!

In fact, some trampoline gyms such as Sky Zone, claim you can burn as much as 1,000 calories an hour!  That’s over 16 calories a minute!

AND, it’s the most fun you’ll ever have ‘exercising’. Guaranteed.

This ranks trampolining the most hilarious of our exercises that burn more fat than running!

Don’t wait; book your ‘SkyRobics’ class today.

2. Battle Ropes.

Battle ropes are those thick, heavy, cumbersome ropes you see in many gyms.

And it’s their stubborn inertia which makes them so useful for burning calories in double-quick time.

A recent study published in the ‘Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research‘, found that whipping heavy ropes for 10 minutes burns 112 calories.

That’s just over 11 calories per minute folks!

Exercises-That-Burn-More-Fat-Than-Running3. Rock Climbing

Although there is no better feeling than scaling the side of a mountain, you don’t have to live in the Rocky’s to enjoy rock climbing.

Indoor rock gyms offer everyone from beginning climbers to advanced boulderers an opportunity to hone their skills and burn fat.

In fact, rock climbing burns up to 15 calories per minute, provided the climber does not rest much between routes.

4. Paddle Boarding

At a leisurely pace, you will burn 7 calories per minute paddle boarding.

Pick up the pace at all and suddenly you’re nearing 14 calories per minute.

Not only is paddle boarding relaxing, the core muscles you work trying to keep you balanced will leave you shredded in no time.

Throw a little paddleboard yoga in on the lake and you’ve added strength and flexibility into your workout routine.

5. Jump Rope

Not just for elementary school kids, jumping rope is a fantastic way to burn a lot of calories, very quickly.

Not only does jumping rope burn a whopping 10 calories a minute, it strengthens your legs, butt, shoulders, and arms in the process.

Start with just 10 minutes a day and you’ve burned 1,000 calories or nearly 100 grams of fat in a week.

6. Hit the HIIT

High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) is one of the most efficient Exercises-That-Burn-More-Fat-Than-Runningways to burn fat out there.

Typically comprised of body weight exercises, such as burpees, push ups, pull ups, and squats among others, HIIT has long been a favorite training method for athletes for good reason.  A single HIIT workout can burn up to 16 calories per minute, nearly twice that of running.

Plus, HIIT is a total-body workout strengthening everything from legs to butt, shoulders to arms, core to back.

7. Indoor Cycling

As tempting as it may be to get on the bike at the gym and watch TV, you won’t get the kind of fat burn you are looking for.

Instead, opt for a spin class that incorporates a variety of speeds and resistances.

Burning 10 calories per minute, indoor cycling is easy on your joints and more fun than running solo.

Plus, with the right instructor and classroom environment, you’ll have added energy and accountability that you wouldn’t have otherwise.

8. Fat Tyre Biking (FTB).

No ‘spare tyre’ here!  That’s because this trendy new winter sport scorches 1,500 calories an hour!

That’s an insane 25 calories every minute, over double that of running!!

Designed to make easy work of winter terrain, fat tyre biking certainly won’t go easy on that lower belly pooch.  The key is in the extra resistance provided by the bike’s oversized, chunky tyres.

However, you don’t need Arctic conditions to enjoy melting off the pounds.  Because these bikes are just as at home on tarmac as they are in snow.

It’s no surprise that FTB ranks top of our 13 exercises that burn more fat than running.

Exercises-That-Burn-More-Fat-Than-Running9. Kettlebell Workouts

There is a reason why so many people love kettlebell workouts. In just 20 minutes, the typical person burns 400 calories!

That’s a whopping 20 calories per minute, more than twice that of running!

Bonus: you use stabilizing muscles in your arms, back, legs and core that will help you with your functional strength.

But before you start swinging, be sure to check your form with a personal trainer or kettlebell instructor.

Not only will you avoid injury, you’ll maximize your fat burn.

10. Rowing

Don’t have a crew partner?  Never fear.  Rowing machines are sitting in just about every gym in the nation.

Try varying your workout by rowing in 500 metre intervals with a two-minute rest in between.

Not only will you burn up to 13 calories per minute, you will keep your form as you move through the workout.

Best of all, rowing works nine major muscle groups as well as your cardiovascular system without any stress on your joints.

11. Roller Skating

Throw on that acid washed denim and hit your local skating rink cause roller skating burns up to 10 calories per minute.

Besides enjoying a sweet soundtrack blaring on the speakers, you can make it a social event by inviting all of your friends!

Even if you opt for solo roller blading down the sidewalk, your calorie burn will still surpass jogging.

12. Dance! Dance! Dance!

It is no wonder that dance aerobic classes continue to be popular.Exercises-That-Burn-More-Fat-Than-Running

Not only do you get to learn a few moves for the club, you burn a staggering 11 calories a minute if you go full intensity for the entire class.

You also tend to feel more like you are at a party than the gym making dance aerobics a way for people to maintain their fat burning potential over a lifetime.

13. Hiking

When we say hiking, we’re not talking about a leisurely stroll to the coffee shop for a latte and a muffin.

Hiking even 3 miles per hour through foothills can burn up to 11 calories per minute.

That number jumps to 15 calories per minute if the hike includes some uphill climb.

Carry a pack, and you can nearly double your per minute burn!!

Plus, walking in nature has been shown to improve memory, boost mood and enhance creativity!

The Bottom Line:

Just because you’re not a runner doesn’t mean you can’t burn fat.

Give these other methods a try and reap the rewards of a workout well done.

Remember people, if you want to lose weight and get healthy, you have to give something in return.

Everyone that has the ‘ideal body’ has given something for that privilege.

And they must continue to invest.

But what you choose to give, needn’t be a ‘treadmill of treadmills’.

Don’t let a lack of imagination or a lazy intellect sabotage you before you’ve even begun.

Our culture is a victim of its own success.

We’ve created a fast-food fueled, chair-ridden, energy-saving lifestyle, intent on rewarding the least amount of movement possible!

Fortunately, there’s tons of fun activities out there when you go and look for them.

I have provided a tiny segment of those opportunities to get you pumped.

Now, stop reading, get out that chair and go and exercise have some fun!
